A quite early album by Schmickler, containing some of the poppiest music he's done. You can hear his debt to bands like Can here. It's on heavy rotation at our house. Albums as eclectic as this one often appear like patchwork quilts - a collection of elements woven together to charm, excite, baffle or impress the listener. Sometimes they work (as with HUMAN HEAD TRANSPLANT & LAURENT PERNICE - even COIL); sometimes they fail (as with many compilation albums). This album seems more like a tapestry of conflicting images woven craftily together to impress the hell out of the listener bullying it's way to the front of CD collections. From flange-washed Cyber-Rock reminiscent of CHROME in their earlier, less-formed days to choral music of 'Tanz Der Vampyres" lost soul loneliness gravid with occult dangers. Snatching comparisons out of the ether, you hear similarities to groups like MURDER INC., a slowed-down MINISTRY and many others. Sometimes dark, sometimes like a microtonal CAN, this music forms a comfortable symbiosis between many sources and a variety of different influences. Angular Prog-Rock meanderings lead into treated Trad instrument parades which give the overall sound a curiously Surreal feel. The loose, improv-y feel to much of this gives you the impression that they were working more to an agenda than to strict song structure - and the net result is a windfall of brilliance. Almost too clever, this album is an odyssey of oddity, a journey through landscapes of contrasting subtlety & full-on outbursts, with colour-tones pushed up as far as they could go. A land-bound voyage of discovery, Joining MARCUS SCHMICKLER who plays guitar, synthesiser, electronics and drums on this album are vocalists YUNG-IN PARK & SARAH DOERING; KAI STOWASSER on viola; MARTIN KOLLBAU on acoustic bass; C-SCHULZ plays oboe & clarinet; THOMAS SIEGER on trombone and PHILIPP ADENACKER on drums.
